Shure Unidyne, Model 55SW

10 Nov

This bad boy is available recently sold on eBay for $125.73.  The Shure Unidyne 55SW is a close cousin to the 55 “Elvis” microphone (which has no multi-impedance switch on the front) — the iconic visuals of the element housing are instantly recognizable.  Just look how he struts his “excellent condition” status on his shiny little brown stand!

Someone gave me a model 555w about 20 years ago, I just dug it out of storage and decided to test it. The end of the cord that plugs into an amp was cut so taped a 1/4 inch guitar plug to it and it sounds great. The foam inside was so old it turned to dust as a brushed it with a paint brush.
I was wondering if it’s harmful to use in this condition? That condition being foamless and what I believe to be 2 ground wires combined as one. It has 3 wires and i don;t know why!!!!!
